About Paul
I walked into a Chicago-area recruiting office in 1998, saw a magazine article about the Coast Guard's Motion Picture Office, and told the recruiter that was the job I wanted. He told me that is not how it works. It took sixteen years, but I got there.
Entertainment liaison, Los Angeles (2014 to 2026)
As Assistant Director of the U.S. Coast Guard Motion Picture & Television Office, I managed productions from first request and script review through on-set support, post-production review and release. I negotiated production and author agreements, wrote writers'-room briefing books for NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Hawai'i, and spoke on the record for entertainment press inquiries. I negotiated separate access arrangements for the Netflix and BBC/Discovery Titan documentaries during an active Marine Board of Investigation, and served as agency lead, technical advisor and contributing producer on Paratus, the PBS documentary that won a 2026 Southeast Emmy Award.
I built creator partnerships with Smarter Every Day and Sam Eckholm, with additional digital projects including MrBeast, Google Year in Search and VICE. I represented the Coast Guard at E3 from 2015 through 2019 and provided technical guidance on Call of Duty, The Division 2, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, World of Warships and EmergencyDispatcherPro. I also ran the office's author program, working with writers and publishers including HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Penguin Random House.
Crisis communications (2000 to 2014)
I served as Joint Information Center director and PIO for the Paulsboro, NJ train derailment, assistant PIO in the Houma JIC during Deepwater Horizon, and led the Hurricane Sandy pollution-response media and community communications plan. Earlier I ran public affairs offices in Seattle, Kodiak and Chicago, and launched the Coast Guard's first use of Twitter on an active search-and-rescue case. I am a FEMA Type 1 Public Information Officer and PIO instructor, and I helped modernize the service's risk-communication training for responders.
What I'm looking for
Communications, publicity and partnership roles in entertainment, media and gaming, where the press moves fast and judgment matters.
